Debate team wins at NWC tournament

January 1, 2011

Central Wyoming College’s debate team won the novice division of parliamentary debate at Northwest College’s Trapper Rendezvous Debate and Speech tournament on November 12 beating out teams from Eastern Wyoming College, Laramie County Community College, Northwest College, Black Hills State University, and the Air Force Academy to accomplish the feat.

All three of Central’s parliamentary debate teams went undefeated through six preliminary rounds of competition. The team of Nicholas Esposito and Shawn Linch then debated Laramie County Community College in semi-finals, where they won on a 3-0 decision. This set up a three-way tie for first among Esposito and Linch as well as CWC’s other teams of Andrew Christian and Martin Diaz and the team of Katie Brooks and Amber Ezell. Andrew Christian also earned top speaker in the novice division with Esposito finishing just behind him in second.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate, a one-on-one person policy debate, CWC advanced three of five entrants to the first elimination round: Christian, Esposito, and Ezell. Christian lost to the eventual tournament champion from the Air Force Academy in the first elimination round. Esposito, who posted a perfect preliminary round record of 5-0, lost to the eventual tournament runner-up from Northwest College in quarterfinals and Ezell, after winning a 3-0 decision over the University of Utah in quarterfinals, lost to the same competitor who beat Esposito in quarterfinals.

CWC’s next tournament will be the CWC Wind River Invitational hosted on the Central Wyoming College campus in Riverton December 9-10.
