New CWC instructor developing competitive forensics program

A new communications instructor at Central Wyoming College is developing a competitive speech and debate program.
CWC has hired Jeremy Christensen to start an intercollegiate program and he is anxious to get a team competing in the fall 2011 semester.
“We’ll get started right away,” said Christensen, who has coached college and high school programs in Wyoming, Michigan and South Dakota. He plans to have a team competing at a tournament in Casper this October, and wants to host a tournament at CWC in December.
Christensen, who is completing a doctoral program at the University of South Dakota, is so excited about developing CWC’s program; he is suggesting interested students contact him prior to his move to Wyoming.
“There are always students who are interested in it,” he said of forensics and debate. In addition to developing confidence, organizational and interdisciplinary skills, Christensen said students are better able to engage in larger political and social issues as well as apply materials they are learning in the classroom. “Writing papers and research will come easier for them,” he said.
Students with writing and communication skills are in high demand with employers, he said, adding that he is confident he’ll be able to identify interested students once classes begin this fall.
                Though it’s been more than a decade since he coached a high school team in Moorcroft, Christensen is well aware of the success of Wyoming’s high school forensic programs. “The best of the best come out of Wyoming as far as parliamentary debate is concerned,” he said.
