January 1, 2012

John Rutter’s Requiem, a seven-movement work for choir, an instrumental ensemble and a soprano soloist, is featured at the annual Central Wyoming College Spring Music Showcase Concert Thursday, May 3, at the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Theatre.

The free 7:30 p.m. concert has approximately 90 musicians from throughout Fremont County involved in the production. Also performing are the Handbell Choir, Concert Band, and Collegiate Chorale.

The Handbell Choir, under the direction of Sharon Dalton, performs three pieces, including Festal Dance by Timothy Waugh, Broadway! arranged by Douglas Wagner, and an arrangement of the popular Classical Gas, originally composed by Mason Williams.

The Concert Band, directed by Andy Peeks, performs six selections, beginning with Wild Wyatt by Gary Gilroy, and followed by A Childhood Hymn by David Holsinger, Reverberations by Brian Balmages, Encanto by Robert W. Smith, Apparitions by Brian Balmages, and the Finale from Symphony no. 4 by Tchaikovsky.

The Collegiate Chorale, under the direction of Robert Hussa, is performing Requiem, featuring Brittany Rae as the soloist. Instrumental musicians from around the state are coming to the CWC campus to form the accompanying ensemble.

“This work was composed in 1983 by John Rutter, in memory of his father,” Hussa said. “Although some of us have performed this work in other choirs in the past, this is the first time it has been performed at CWC.
