CWC tutors receive national certification

Ten tutors working at the Central Wyoming College Student Success Center were recently certified by the College Learning and Reading Association.

Nine tutors earned Level 1 certification and one earned Level 2 certification after participating in at least ten hours of training on a variety of topics, self and staff evaluations and 25 hours of pre-certification tutoring during the last academic year.

Tutors are student peers and are often community members working in their field of study or are retired, said Lisa Appelhans, the tutor coordinator for the federally supported Student Support Services program at CWC.

“Since I’ve been here, this is the most students ever to certify,” she said. Those who became certified are close to one-third of all the tutors that help students.

The tutoring program is a valuable tool to retention and success, she added. Tutors play an “integral part in student learning and role modeling.” The tutors assist students in a variety of ways, including help with note taking, studying for exams and outlining ideas for papers and oral projects. Tutoring is offered, at no cost, to CWC students, through grant resources.

A CWC alumna Connie Murray reached level 2 certification and continues to tutor this academic year. Earning level 1 certification were Fazliddin Basitov, Georgianna “Gigi” Holley, Stephanie Klein, Holly Likins and Lawrence “Lee” Wickstrom, who have returned to tutor this year at CWC. Others who were certified have transferred to four-year institutions. They include Eliah Dayton, Rachel Lamb, Larissa Lawrence and Mason Webb.
