Central Wyoming College men’s and women’s golf opened their fall season with a tournament in La Junta, Colorado at Otero College, September 1-2.

Kaleb Spiva and Mason Jowsey were two standouts for the men’s team with Spiva finishing a two day score of 148 and putting him with five points towards national qualification.

Jowsey, playing for individuals and not counting as team points, had rounds of 74 and 75 for a two day total of 149, placing him in sixth place with two other people.

We had a good opening tournament. The first day six of seven guys had scores in the 70’s and every one of them had at least one round in the 70’s. The competition is tough and all the schools have good players. We need to make up some ground on the first place team, but the guys are willing to work hard on their game. We now know where we stand and what we need to do. ”

Russ Holgate, golf coach

The men’s team finalized with a score of 619 and placed fourth overall with Otero Junior College taking the lead with a score of 591, followed by Eastern Wyoming College with 592.

For the women’s team Baillee Watt and Sarah Schroefel started the season well and placed in the top five. Watt had a total of 165 strokes with 79 in day one and 86 in day two. She finished in third place with teammate Schroefel not far behind, placing fifth with a total of 172. Schroefel had 82 strokes in day one and 90 in day two.

The women’s team finished with 784 and placed second overall. Otero Junior College also took the lead with a final score of 668.

“The ladies had a good showing also,” Holgate said. “Baillee and Sarah both played well the first day, sitting first and second after the round. Both were disappointed with their play on Friday, but will be back on the course Tuesday for a focused practice. Kendra bounced back on Friday to post 87 on a much tougher course than Thursday. Tara played in her first golf tournament and has been working hard on her game and has seen much improvement the past two weeks.”

Golf will travel to their next tournament in Sterling, Colorado at Northeastern Junior College, September 8-9.
