Rustlers turn it up at Sheridan rodeo

The men’s rodeo team turned up the competition at Sheridan with six cowboys making top ten and bumping their standings to the third spot in the NIRA Central Rocky Mountain Region.

“I had anticipated the team’s outcome at this last rodeo. I’m proud that they did well and look forward to their continuous improvement,” said Drew Schrock, rodeo coach.

Dalton Burgener brought home the winning buckle in the steer wrestling event. Although his time in the long go-round was 13.3 seconds his improvement in the final round of 7.4 seconds brought him to the lead position.

Schrock said Burgener pulled one of the toughest steers in the final round but he’s mental preparation for the final round proved to be a great outcome for Burgener.

Teammate Teigen Finnerty had a time of 8.4 seconds in the long go-round and 17.5 in the short go-round; placing him in third place. Kyle Choate finished in sixth place with 6.4 seconds in the long go-round and a no time in the short go-round, however Choate had better lunch in the team roping event finishing in fourth place with team roping partner Klint Choate. The two had a time of 7.8 seconds in the long go-round and 15.7 seconds in the short go-round.

Bryce Sturman placed fourth in the tie down roping; catching his calf in 11.3 seconds in the long go-round and coming back in the short go-round with 12.2 seconds.

Brady Thurston had another good weekend in the saddle bronc riding event; scoring a 61 in the long go-round. He had a little tougher ride in the short go-round and ended his ride with a 44.

“Brady being able to come back in the finals at both rodeos is great for him and our team,” Schrock said.

The men finalized their team score with 550 points for third place. Sitting in the lead is Sheridan College with 1,035 points and in second is Chadron State College with 883.33 points.

The team will travel to Lamar, Colorado this weekend, September 30-October 2.

“It’s a long trip to Lamar so we will take the time to get there early so the team and their horses can get the proper rest they need for the weekends rodeo,” Schrock said. “The team will continue to work hard and keep a positive attitude. I’m hoping for the women’s team to get some points on the board this weekend. The team is amped up to win a rodeo to make that movement on the leader board.”
