Fall Showcase Concert set for Thursday, Nov. 16

The Central Wyoming College Music Department will present a fall showcase concert on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 pm in the Robert A. Peck Arts Center Theater. The concert will feature the Collegiate Chorale under the direction of Sharon Dalton, the Concert Band directed by Sarah Trembly, and the Central Wyoming Brass Quintet. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Central Wyoming Brass Quintet, a local brass ensemble, will perform Rondeau by Jean Joseph Mouret. The Fremont County Band will perform five pieces, opening with Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. The band will then perform one of John Philip Sousa’s lesser-known marches from his operetta, The Charlatan. Following the march will be Alfred Reed’s arrangement of Greensleeves for wind band. The band will also perform two movements from Lincolnshire Posy by Percy Grainger, one of the most prolific wind band composers in history. The band’s selections will end with a modern piece by Rick Kirby entitled, Echoes In The Woods, a piece that portrays the history of the logging industry in northern Wisconsin.

The Collegiate Chorale will perform five pieces, beginning with Ubi Caritas, a setting inspired by the Gregorian chant tradition by Norwegian born composer Ola Gjeilo. Second on the program is Gloria in Excelsis Deo by Jeff Trenchard and will be followed by Morten Lauridsen’s beautiful Sure on This Shining Night set to text by the famous American novelist, journalist, poet, screenwriter, and film critic, James Agee. The chorale portion of the concert ends with two very different love songs. The first is a David C. Dickau piece set to the text of the classic e.e. cummings poem, that also shares its title, i carry your heart with me. The final song for the Chorale is Nelly Bly, arranged by John Halloran and composed by one of America’s most well-known and performed composers of all time, Stephen Foster.
