February 26, 2020 by Laura Phagan

Central Wyoming College employee Heather Holbert won the Classified Staff of the Year award from the Wyoming Association of Community College Trustees on Feb. 12 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

All seven of the Wyoming community colleges submit nominees for each category for the WACCT awards which are student, professional staff, classified staff, faculty, foundation volunteer and board of trustees member. Holbert was surprised to hear her name called.

“First I replayed it in my head to make sure it was my name and that was called before I moved,” she said. “I am honored that my coworkers nominated me.”

Holbert said it was a great experience to be nominated with other classified staff from the community colleges who have all done incredible things.

To be honored with them felt really special. ”

She said seeing what she does that seems her normal everyday things, through other’s eyes was surreal. She was nominated by her coworkers Pam Roberts, Debbie Graham and Mary Tasi, who wrote her nomination.

Five CWC employees and one student went to the awards ceremony. During their time there they toured the capitol and were able to see the renovations. The Capitol is more than 125 years old and reopened in July 2019 after being closed for four years for the renovations.

“That was really special,” Holbert said. Experiencing the tour with international student, Kerim Velbayev, and seeing him take lots of pictures of the capitol was neat, Holbert said.

Overall the experience was great for Holbert. She attested that working with a great group of people who work well together and enjoy being around each other at work and outside of work makes CWC a great place.
