CWC honors a Navy veteran

Ray Samuel Huenefeld, a Navy verteran was honored today in a flag ceremony performed by the Riverton Color Guard and members of the Fort Washakie Legion Post #81. Huenefeld was a World War II vet who recently passed away on Oct. 13, 2016.

 

Huenefeld was born on August 19, 1923 in Callaway, Nebraska and started his schooling in Callaway before later moving to the Burns-Carpenter area. He graduated from high school in Pavillion and after graduation Huenefeld and his twin brother both enlisted in the service on November 11, 1943, where they had a brief moment of fame by having their enlistment photo published on the front page of several newspapers; not only in their hometown, but across the West.  Huenefeld spent his Navy career in the Pacific islands during WWII as an airplane mechanic and was discharged on March 23, 1946 and returned to his parents home in Wyoming.

 

Huenefeld continued his education through the GI Bill at the University of Wyoming graduating in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
